Description:
Michelangelo's Mode

Admission: $8 for adults/$6 for children, military and seniors

The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center brings another master to its Helen T. White Galleries this fall. One of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo Buonarotti, was a painter, poet, architect, and sculptor. The Touched by the Hands of God: Michelangelo's Models exhibition will have replicates of the artists' working models, or bozzetti, on display to the public October 10, 2015 through May 29, 2016 in the King Gallery of the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center.

This collection of six models has an incredible origin story founded in technology and art in which Dr. Harry Spell, of the Harry & Karly Spell Foundation, has created a way to replicate the fragile models Michelangelo used as maquettes for his famous sculptures. In collaboration with the Museo Casa Buonarotti in Florence, Italy, Dr. Spell was able to use his five-step process to re-create the priceless pieces through laser scanning and rapid prototyping technology. Reproduction - let alone travel or touching - of these pieces fashioned with clay, wax, and wood has been thinkable before now, because the risk of damage to the irreplaceable models was much too great. This collection of models captures Michelangelo's masterpieces in a version that will sustain time, travel, and wear.

The bozzetti provide insight to Michelangelo's process and preparation for his sculptures. The pieces which will be on display are Nudo Virile (David), Torso Virile (Louvre Slave), Dio Fluviale (River God), Due Lottatori (Two Wrestlers), Nudo Femminile (Female Nude), and Crocifisso (Crucifix). It is believed that Michelangelo was nearly blind when he created the piece Crocifisso late in his career. Because of the nature of this collection, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center plans to offer "Touch Days" in partnership with visually-impaired organizations in which touching of the pieces will be encouraged. "It is widely accepted that the sense of touch offers a more complete art experience by provoking thought and allowing for a wider range of emotions," says Curator Liz Szabo. "We are excited for the opportunity to provide this enriching experience for our visitors."

This exhibition is sponsored by the Dante Alighieri Society, Don & Helen Banner, Joe & Kris Bower, Jim & Bernadette Warren, Kim & Kim Barickman, Rudy & Bernadette Pedula, Elaine & Bill Nicoll, Rita Gersick, Koncilja & Koncilja, Carl & Kay Bartecchi,Ashok & Smitta Patel, and Classical KCME 88.7-FM.
