A free public lecture presented by the Rocky Mountain Military Affairs Society, "Big Brother and the Draft: Conscription and the Rise of Big Government in the American Civil War," by Dr Jenny Weber (University of Kansas / US Air Force Academy). Jenny Weber is an associate professor at the University of Kansas and a visiting professor at the Air Force Academy. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton in 2003. An expert on the Civil War Era, she has published on such issues as antiwar Democrats and their impact on the war effort, the politics of Union soldiers, the Battle of Gettysburg and Lincoln and the powers of the presidency. The author of Copperheads: The Rise and Fall of Lincoln’s Opponents in the North (Oxford University Press, 2006), she is currently working on a book about conscription in the North and the rise of big government.
