Arts Hullabaloo and Alla Prima Westcliffe Description:
Coming up in Westcliffe, CO, the 12th Annual “Alla Prima Westcliffe” and “Arts Hullabaloo” are two long-standing art events which run hand in hand Sept. 21 through Sept. 29, 2018.
Arts Hullabaloo has events for all ages all week building to an exciting climax Saturday, Sept. 29, with a day-long celebration of the visual, performing and musical arts, including demonstrations and special events for children.
Hullabaloo week gets flying with kites! Friday, Sept. 21 from 1-3 p.m. at the West Custer County Library Community Room is The Art of Making Kites for kids of all ages. Saturday, Sept. 22 at The Bluff at the end of Main Street, will be the first annual 'Flying High' home-made kite flying contest which includes a viewing of the Smokey Jack Observatory after the contest. On Wed., Sept. 26 at 6 p.m., at The Jones Theater, artist and animator Aaron Blaise will present “Persistence of Vision” followed by Oscar nominated “Brother Bear.” Fri., Sept. 28, Jim Jackson brings Art Guffaw for Kids to the Library Community Room, from 1 to 2:30 for a special Camp Happiness. Sat., Sept. 29. downtown will be packed with entertainment including Jim the Bubble Guy, music, Gushikawa’s Ceremonial Sword Dance for Peace, sidewalk chalk art contest, face painting, pottery and weaving demonstrations, plein air artists and vendors. Alla Prima Westcliffe Paint-Out and Paint-In features painting created from life in the manner of plein air. Against the back drop of the Sangre de Cristos, landscapes include old mines, cabins and working ranches along with models and still life set-ups. Artists will compete for $3,500 in prizes. Competition begins Mon. Sept. 24. The reception is Saturday, Sept. 29 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Alla Prima week gets started with well-known artist Tim Deibler at a one-day workshop Sunday, Sept. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Deibler will demonstrate plein air painting in the morning followed by expert coaching in the afternoon. He is a graduate of the Art Institute of Colorado and has won five Awards of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America’s National Juried Show and is best known for his beautiful portrayal of nature.
Deibler is the juror for the Alla Prima Westcliffe show. The reception for the juried show and sale is Sat., Sept. 29 from 3 to 5 p.m. at 3rd Street Gallery, 59000 N. Hwy 69. Awards will be announced then. The artist named best of show will receive an invitation to the 2019 Art for the Sangres. Art for the Sangres is a fine art sale and reception that supports San Isabel Land Protection Trust Land Conservation. Visit www.sanisabel.org for more information.
