The Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is offering a free genetic cancer screening event on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Dorcy Cancer Center, 2004 Lake Ave. Appointments are free and open to the public, and individuals have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a genetic counselor to review family history, learn about potential risks and screening protocols for cancers including breast, colorectal, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancers, among others.

In addition, those who are at risk for lung cancer may also meet the Dorcy Cancer Center Lung Navigator for tips and resources to help with smoking cessation and to determine if they are eligible for a low-dose CT scan, especially geared for current or past smokers age 55-74.

“Cancer is best cured if it is detected in its earliest stages, and genetic screening provides the opportunity for individuals to learn more about their genetic predisposition and other risks,” said Brenda Galassini, oncology program manager, St. Mary-Corwin. “A simple and quick screening is imperative in being proactive and maintaining excellent health. We urge individuals to take advantage of this service that may in some cases be lifesaving.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, some genetic mutations can have a negative effect on an individual’s health and mutations that are harmful may increase a person’s chance or risk of developing a disease or cancer. Overall, inherited mutations play a role in about 5 to 10 percent of all cancers. However, thanks to genetic testing, experts can detect specific inherited changes and provide individuals with the best chance for remaining healthy.
