In her talk, Professor Montoya, will take a birds eye view of the southern Colorado landscape to talk about how the concept of "bordlerlands" or "la frontera" has shaped the community in this region. Using examples from the Spanish entrada, the nineteenth century fur trade, and the migration of workers to CF&I industrial empire, Professor Montoya will discuss the complex reasons why people have been drawn to this region and why they stay to make their homes and develop community.

Maria E. Montoya is an Associate Professor of History at New York University and the Dean of Arts and Sciences at NYU Shanghai. She is the author of numerous articles on the History of the American West, Environmental, Labor and Latina/o history and of the book, Translating Property: The Maxwell Land Grant and the Conflict over Land in the American West, 1840-1900. She is the lead author on the U.S. History textbook, Global Americans: A Social and Global History of the United States.
