Jewelry and Metalsmithing Class
9:00 AM
Colorado Center for Metal Arts
Description:
Metals I class(beginning jewelry and metalsmithing class)
with Josiah Trujillo and Pattie Parkhurst

Classes begin July 10 and run every Tuesday and Wednesday through August 8, 2018.

The beginning jewelry class will present the step by step processes of jewelry fabrication: designing, piercing, sawing, filing, texturing, soldering, polishing and stone setting. Using ring-making as an example, students will be taught to pierce and saw out shapes from copper and brass first then move to silver. Students will then be guided on techniques which can be used to add individualized texture to metal surfaces, using a variety of tools, such as stamps, hammers and the rolling mill. Students will then make a ring band from either sheet or wire in order to use these basic techniques, with a special focus on soldering, which can be one of the more challenging aspects of jewelry making. Finally, in order to add color students will choose a cabochon stone to add to their ring. Stone setting using fine silver bezels will be the final step in the process.

Along with extensive demonstrations, theory and practice, students will learn the basic techniques which will allow them to participate in the open studio.
